1970 TRIUMPH TR6
The Triumph TR6 has been with Fostering Classics for around two and a half months and has absorbed around 350 man-hours to restore. It is now restored to a high standard, that will look good at any motor show or down the pub! All mechanical, electric, trim and cosmetic work has been restored to a high standard.

Signal Red |
It has spent around 28 years with its last owner, who carried out a significant body and trim restoration when he got the car in the early 90s. All 4 wings and the boot lid were replaced with genuine Triumph items and the car was repainted in Signal red and a new black interior trim was fitted (to replace the original tan brown trim).
Engine
The engine and engine bay were in poor condition, but the previous owner advised that the engine had been reconditioned by a TR specialist just before he bought it. After disassembling the engine, it was clear that it had indeed be reconditioned and the cylinders, pistons and cylinder head were all great. The cylinder head was sent away to have hardened exhaust valves and seats fitted, to allow standard unleaded to be used by the new owner. The engine was then reassembled with new water pump, hoses, timing chain, fuel metering unit, Lucas fuel pump and all consumables. A large amount of effort was required on the throttles and linkages to balance the airflow correctly. Fuel tank replaced, new fuel pipes and filter fitted. The under-bonnet area was painted. The finished product looks and performs fantastically.
Transmission and driveline
The overdrive solenoid and switches were replaced as they were faulty. The clutch master cylinder was reconditioned with new seals and new hydraulic pipes fitted. The differential output seals were replaced. All units had new oil and grease. The clutch pedal bushes were changed.
Suspension and steering
All suspension was stripped, cleaned and painted. New rubber bushes and seals fitted all around. New front dampers fitted. All reassembled with new bolts and fixings.
Brakes
All brakes were stripped. New pistons and seals fitted to the callipers, new discs, pads and fittings. New rear slave cylinders, shoes and fittings. All new brake lines and pipes. The master cylinder was ok.
Body and chassis
The chassis was stripped, cleaned, checked for corrosion and repainted. No corrosion was found and no signs of welding or repair. A few dents from careless jacking, but not detrimental to rigidity. The body already benefitted from 4 new wings and boot lid. There were a few dents and chips and the paint was OK but required too many repairs, so it was decided to repaint the outer panels. The inner body and floors have had repairs in the past, but they have been done to a good standard. There are some visible welds present on the inner wings. The inner floors were stripped, checked, painted and sound deadening fitted, the inner boot was painted. The underbody was cleaned, checked and undersealed, again no signs of corrosion. The hood frame was stripped and painted and a new soft top fitted. The hood cover was in good condition. The bumpers were in poor condition, so brand new bumpers have been fitted. New seat covers fitted from our preferred supplier, John Skinner Manufacturing Ltd. New Centre console cover, new sun visors. Doors stripped, serviced and adjusted. Heater control cables replaced. Carpets and boot trim were good, just needed fitting correctly. The factory hardtop was painted. It is perfectly useable but could do with new seals and maybe a new Headlining to make perfect.
Electrical and equipment
New wiring harness fitted. Instruments removed, stripped, cleaned and checked. Ammeter replaced. All light units stripped, cleaned and checked. New horns fitted and column earthing sorted. Interior lights fitted. Wiper motor stripped and reconditioned. New washer pump. Pipes and jets removed and cleaned. New wipers. Retro radio fitted (not connected). New Flasher relay. Column switched removed and reconditioned. Heater motor works intermittently.
